Box office performance – Avengers: Infinity War

On April 27th, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters building on over a decade of movies in the various Marvel franchises. The film became one of the biggest box office hits in history, having had one of the best opening weekends ever. This article will take a look at how Infinity War stacks up historically using information from BoxOfficeMojo.

Domestic gross

Avengers: Infinity War is currently the second highest grossing superhero film at the domestic box office, only behind Black Panther which came out earlier this year. Currently, Infinity War has been in theaters for 130 days (18.6 weeks). If it sticks around as long as Black Panther did (175 days – 25 weeks) it might be able to pass it.

Worldwide gross

Avengers: Infinity War had the best worldwide weekend opening of all-time, earning a whopping $640.5 million. It earned $328.8 million (59.8%) of that from its combined overseas openings.

In terms of all-time worldwide gross, Infinity War is fourth at $2,046.4 billion, with $1.367.6 billion (66.8%) of that coming from its overseas earnings. The film is one of only four to cross the two billion mark worldwide and one of only 36 to cross the one billion mark worldwide.

*Films over the $500 million mark domestically but not the $1.3 billion worldwide: Beauty and the Beast (13th: $1,263.5), The Incredibles 2* (17th, $1,166.3)  Rogue One (25th: $1,056.1) and The Dark Knight (34th, $1,004.6)

*The Incredibles 2 has only been in theatres for 81 days (11.6 weeks)

Other marks that Infinity War set 

Avengers: Infinity War has the second highest opening day gross of all time at $106.3 million only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. ($119.1 million)

Avengers: Infinity War has the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time at $257.6 million.

Avengers: Infinity War tied as the fastest film to cross the $100 million mark domestically, doing so in one day. It joined Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Going back to 1982 Avengers: Infinity War is the highest grossing film for the month of April ($678.8 million).

Box office performance: Black Panther

On February 16th, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther hit theaters and has since become a massive box office and cultural hit over the past three months. The film dominated the box office in ways that few films have in terms of its long-term staying power. This article will take a look at how Black Panther stacks up historically using information from BoxOfficeMojo.

Weekly and weekend box office streaks

From February 16 until March 22, Black Panther was the No. 1 movie at the domestic box office for five weeks running. The last time a film had a streak that long was Avatar, which was No. 1 for seven weeks from December 18, 2009 until February 4, 2010.

In terms of the weekend box office, Black Panther was the No. 1 movie at the domestic box office for six weeks in a row. Once again, Avatar was the last movie to hold the top spot that long. It won the weekend box office eight weeks in a row.

Domestic gross

Towards the end of March, Black Panther became the highest grossing superhero film at the domestic box office, passing The Avengers. Last month, the film passed Titanic on the all-time domestic box office list to move into third place.

*All of the above films have come out since 2012 except Avatar (2009), The Dark Knight (2008) and Titanic (1997).

*Black Panther (12.4 weeks) and Infinity War (2.4 weeks) are the only films on the above list active in theaters.

When looking at the all-time domestic gross list and accounting for ticket price inflation, Black Panther comes in at number 30. This puts it $1,154,396,982 behind Gone with the Wind, as opposed to the $240,330,407 it is behind The Force Awakens on the non-adjusted list.

Worldwide gross

Black Panther had the 16th best worldwide weekend opening of all-time at $371.4 million. It earned $169.4 million (45.6%) of that from its combined overseas openings.

In terms of all-time worldwide gross, Black Panther is ninth at $1,342.2 billion, with $645.8 million (48.1%) of that coming from its overseas earnings. The film is one of only 11 to cross the $1.3 billion mark worldwide and one of only 34 to cross the one billion mark worldwide.
